Santillana del mar

We left our apartment In Bezano after a little breakfast. We were lucky to get into town yesterday by 1300 so we could do some food shopping. In most places in Spain on the weekends the store closes at 1 or 1:30. We had coffee and cake and toast left by Monserat , our hostess, fruit and juice we bought. We were out by 6:30 and on the trail. The sun was out for the first time and it was a beautiful day We walked to Boo where you had a choice of walking around the river about 8 extra k or walking across the rail road bridge, which is against the law, or taking the train. Guess what we did. We met a local walker and after passing us twice he came back to show us how to get across the bridge with out getting hit by a train. Walking the bridge took only a few minutes: the rest of the walk to the next station was on a path many feet removed from the tracks. Off we went out Into the country. We finally found an open coffee bar and some 5 pilgrims having coffee. It has been rare when we have encountered pilgrims on our way. We generally meet up at night or late afternoon in the albergues. We marched on meeting and accepting info from the locals. We arrived in Santillana del mar in the midst of a festival. The albergue did not open until 4 so we decided to get a room in the Hospedaje Octavio. It is right when you enter the town. It is a beautiful old building well maintained with lots of flowers Santillana del mar is a very picturesque medieval village. There is a 12th century Collegiate Church. The cloisters are finely crafted Romanesque works. We walked the town then returned with beer and a picnic lunch we had on our porch.
