Gijon

June 1 Gijon

We started out a bit early because it was going to be a long day. We had 30k to walk, 2 mountains to go over and a long walk into Gijon the largest city on the coast of Austurias. We walked 6k and then the camino splits one route goes to Gijon the other route goes to Oviedo, the beginning of the Camino Primativo.
We then started up and we continued to go up as we passed group after group of Spaniards. Today is Saturday and everyone was out exercising. They all wished us a buen camino. When we got to the top we went down, down, down. Then we started back up, up, up to go back down, down, down. Sometimes we walked the road instead of the Camino. Markings were not always clear cut. We reached the out skirts of Gijon and walked towards the promenade by the sea. Information is on the promenade near old town. After multiple attempts by Information to get us a hotel, they contacted the Alberque at the university which had rooms. Future Norte pilgrims this is the best deal in town bar known.

Do we go to Oviedo and walk the Primitivo; or, continue you to Gijon?

Seems the trail goes straight up forever; and, improves little.

Almost at the top.

Just another spectacular view.

Coffee at the very top of the endless climb. We bought the coffee. George couldn't move.

Clever combination of an ancient corn bin with house entrance.

Beach art worthy of a €. I just barely hit the target. You know the wind.

View of the beach at Gijon.

All pilgrims should know about this University Alberque. Right in the middle of Old Town. Be sure to visit information centers when you travel.

Our university pad Breakfast and included bathroom, 15€.

Really we are almost asleep; but, you have to eat.

  1. Stu, did you actually finish the glass of wine before falling asleep? You look done in. Tough day. But no rain.
