Aviles

June 2 Aviles

We left the student residence in Gijon at 0615. The man that was at the desk fixed us coffee and juice and provided everything from toast to cake. The rooms were small but adequate all with a bathroom. Typical of student housing. When we left our place there were still students out partying. Friday and Saturday nights, all night long, the young are hanging around the bars and clubs. They start around 2100 and go until 0700 or 0800 in the morning. The noise disrupts sound sleep. The next morning, the streets are littered with bottles and broken glass, cigarette buts and paper. The street sweepers were hard at work cleaning up. There were young people every where when we left. It took about an hour to walk out of the city passing industrial parks and a steel plant. We walked up to the heights of Monte Areo and then down into the flat farmland in the valley. Today is Sunday so most bars and cafes are closed. We stopped only once for cafe in the 26k we walked. The entry into Aviles along a seemingly endless business road is not attractive. Aviles is the 3rd biggest city in Austorias. We left George at the albergue, whose hospitalero was born in Puerto Rico, lived in Chicago as a banker and escaped to Aviles to teach English. Just one of the many surprises along life's many caminos. We went off to find a small pension. When asking for directions, the Spanish are extremely helpful. We booked into a lovely small pension, Pension La Fruta, across from the Don Pedro Hotel. The owner showed us to a beautiful room with a bath. She took all our dirty clothes and washed and hung them out to dry. She gave us a map and showed us where the camino started and where to have a good fish meal. Tomorrow El Pitu 27K away. See you then.
